School gardens to boost nutrition and performance of students

APEO has initiated gardens at the Maalimin Primary School and an upcoming skills development center. These gardens aim to improve nutrition among school-going children and enhance their academic performance. The gardens have sparked interest in farming and agriculture among students, aligning with the school's curriculum. The first school garden was established in April 2025 at Maalimin Primary with support from APEO.

Through the national school feeding program, these gardens are expected to significantly boost students' nutrition. Improved meals will lead to better school attendance and academic results. APEO also plans to establish a virtual 'nutrition bridge' connecting the school with the nearby health center. Health staff will educate children, parents, and teachers on the importance of fruits and vegetables in children’s diets. The initiative will primarily benefit children in Early Childhood Development (ECD) classes, particularly those under five years old. To meet demand, the school will also source produce from nearby smallholder farmers, creating new market opportunities and strengthening community ties.

Despite current challenges with water availability, APEO plans to connect the school to the new dam at Maalimin Settlement. A strengthened Teachers-Parents Association will also maintain the gardens, especially during school holidays to prevent livestock damage. This initiative represents APEO's broader mission to promote sustainable development and food security in dryland communities.
