On May 1, 2026, the Africa Pastoralists Empowerment Organization (APEO), with support from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), successfully carried out a seedlings distribution exercise across six settlements in Garissa’s northern corridor: Dujis, Afwein, Maalimin, Tog Duub, Modogashe, Gerufa, and Wayama Jibril. A total of 220 tree seedlings were distributed, including Neem, Terminalia brownii, Acacia species, and Delonix regia (Flamboyant tree). These were sourced from KFS Garissa and supplemented by APEO’s own nursery. In addition, crop seeds—pigeon peas, cowpeas, and beans (Nyota variety)—were provided to strengthen food security. This initiative is part of APEO’s mission to scale up climate smart agriculture, build community resilience, and mitigate land degradation in the drylands of Garissa County. Strong community participation, especially by women and children, underscored the importance of inclusive approaches to environmental restoration. APEO expresses gratitude to KFS for its continued partnership in advancing sustainable solutions for dryland communities.

The Africa Pastoralists Empowerment Organization (APEO) participated in commemorating the PBO - Public Benefits Organizations (stands for NGOs and CSOs) week (13-18 April, 2026) in Garissa County. The purpose was to bring together the PBO sector for networking, learning, and collaboration as part of the transition of the NGOs into PBOs. Key highlights of the 3 -day event included activities that promote care for the environment that we live and depend for our sustenance. It followed up this with more planting (over 250 seedlings) on farms, schools and communities in the Lagdera sub-county of Garissa.

July 2025: APEO participated at the Maalimin dam launch on 24 July 2024 by the Governor of Garissa County, H.E. Nathif Adam. APEO advocated for and provided oversight in its development of the dam. It was funded by the national government through World Bank (FLOCA program) funding and was implemented by Garissa County government.

The Africa Pastoralists Empowerment Organization (APEO), in partnership with the Garissa County Government and international NGO Hands of Charity, is set to roll out a major cataract treatment campaign at the Garissa Level Referral Hospital this August–September 2026. The week long initiative will provide free cataract surgeries and treatment to between 500 and 600 patients, restoring sight and hope to many who cannot afford care. Hands of Charity will fully fund the campaign, supply modern surgical equipment, and deploy specialized doctors and support staff. Local hospital teams will also receive training in advanced eye surgery techniques, ensuring long term impact beyond the campaign. APEO remains committed to supporting this noble cause, which will transform lives and strengthen healthcare capacity in Garissa County.
