Our operations

APEO is constantly working towards the mission to extend world class and proven solutions to dryland communities through advancements in social and economic development knowledge. We do this through blending communities time-tested own knowledge and best practices with technological advancements in the four focus sectors of the organization.

This blended approach to development is critical to building the resiliency of the communities in a sustainable manner to prolonged droughts such as that of 2022 that affected nearly 5.0 m people in Kenya and led to the loss of 1.5 m heads of livestock, including many from Garissa County, the operational base of APEO.

Our partnership program with various research and development organizations provides a bridge for additional technical, financial and implementation support. Finally, APEO’s staff and volunteers bring the organization’s own brand of personalized support to our work.

These operational guidelines are underscored by APEO’s understanding that the pastoralist communities of North Eastern region of Kenya and by extension other parts of Africa require specific programs that are designed for their special and often difficult living conditions. Therefore context-specific solutions that are robust enough to cope with changing local and global circumstances are required.

For this purpose, skills development through a facilitative process that does respects norms, culture, and builds on their knowledge systems is needed. The impacts of the skills development and overall community facilitation is paying dividends in all the four focal areas of APEO.
